The Sign Sign Mural Project
Using the power of public art, the Sign Sign Mural Project exists to inspire people to learn ASL, while also spreading awareness about Deaf culture across the United States. This project’s core values are education, accessibility, communication, empathy, and a greater understanding of each other as human beings coming from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. By raising questions surrounding the benefits and values of learning sign language, the idea is that people will be inspired to learn sign and about deaf culture.
Valerie Rose is deaf and was born with single-sided deafness (SSD). Her first language is American Sign Language (ASL). The deaf world is very visual, so she feels the most connected to drawing, painting, and using her hands. As an activist, she uses her art to support causes that matter most to her. She is the coordinator of the “Sign Sign Mural Project” that is inspiring people to learn ASL and spreading awareness about Deaf culture across the United States. She is also an ASL teacher and lives in Northern California, where she enjoys teaching and signing with her community.
