Finney Farm Seed Distro
Finney Farm Seed Distro hopes to connect people to food and land base and provide support as they learn to produce food and save seed. Free seed is accessible to all, but this projects primary areas of focus include those who reside in the Cascadia Bioregion, low income residents, schools, food banks, indigenous tribes, and other marginalized populations.
For over 15 years, Finney Farm Seed Distro has provided organic, heirloom, open pollinated seed for free as a way to support food access. This project began at the Okanogan Barter Faire, wishing to add some additional items to the Finney Farm free booth, volunteers shared a few hundred packages of seed. Since then, it has grown beyond expectation and Finney Farm Seed Distro has shared approximately 10,000 seed packages annually. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, all seed distribution efforts were in person through events or arranged local deliveries (food banks, schools, etc). During the pandemic, Finney Farm Seed Distro distributed primarily through mail and are hoping to find a balance with seed mailing and a focus on in-person distribution. The folks who began this project were residents of Finney Farm, an intentional community in Skagit County, founded in 1989 by a group of radical environmentalists.
Finney Farm Seed Distro project leaders have a history of activism, with social and educational outreach as a foundational ideal. This project is unique in that no one else seems to be keen on investing hundreds of hours of volunteer labor to give something away that would normally be sold. This project hopes to grow to include educational materials and opportunities as well as more volunteers and more seeds! It takes awesome volunteer commitment to support food sovereignty in the Cascadia Bioregion by growing, packaging, and distributing organic, open pollinated seed at no charge to increase food access and biodiversity.
