New Portland Cascadia Now! Tumblr Blog

Cascadia Now! PDX Portland has a new Tumblr Blog at http://cascadia-pdx.tumblr.com/. Pictures, news & info; stay up to date, get involved! Raising bioregional awareness in portland, puddletown, pedaltown, stumptown, bridge city, rose city, or whatever you want to call this place. Those interested in being involved in organizing efforts are also encouraged to join their Portland Chapter Email Alert System: http://cascadia-pdx.tumblr.com/email  or by sending an email to portland-cascadia-subscribe@lists.riseup.net. This email system is a one way messaging system to alert you to upcoming Cascadia events and to receive monthly newsletters from Cascadia Now!

From the website:

“...if we identify ourselves based on a sense of place in the world, connected to the life-sustaining system around us, it becomes our duty to implement necessary changes to increase and sustain the flourishing of non-human life around us. And when those changes are made, they will inherently increase the flourishing of human life. The policies and politics of this process are dense and should be discussed face to face, in living rooms, at community events, gatherings, convergences, conferences, and the halls of power, not on facebook. But our first step, as Cascadians aware of what lays ahead if we don’t step up, is to make sure everyone living in our bioregion understands that Cascadia is real, it exists, that they belong to it. That it will take all of us working together to make our bioregion the thriving community that it once was. The legends of streams so thick with salmon that you could walk across can again come true. Cascadia is home to the largest living things, we are a place of legends and our legends are not for sale at any price. Let us Free Cascadia and free ourselves to thrive again!”

Occupied Cascadia Documentary to Premier October 6th

Occupied Cascadia is a documentary film both journalistic and expressionistic.  Exploring the emerging understanding of bioregionalism within the lands and waters of the Northeast Pacific Rim, the filmmakers interweave intimate landscape portraits with human voices both ideological and indigenous.  Stories from the land contrast critique of dominant culture, while an embrace of the radical unknown informs a re-birthed and growing culture of resistance.  Filming began during the outset of the populist “Occupy” movement, and finished by joining the voices seeking to re-contextualize popular revolt within our life-world as a movement to decolonize, un-occupy, and re-inhabit the living Earth through deep understanding and identification with our specific bioregions.

Cascadia Matters is a grass roots organization made up by a collective effort of writers, artists, educators and media activists. They aim to highlight the emerging ideas, struggles and times of the Cascadia bioregion and beyond. In order to effectively provide clean air and clean water for future generations, our attention must not only shift towards the bioregions of the Pacific Northwest, but also towards stopping corrosive agendas within them. The diverse voices throughout this land have forged the way for many movements and there is a growing necessity to inspire a unified culture of resistance. This film promotes that dialogue through bioregional awareness.

This specific campaign is of the utmost importance in starting the dialog needed to confront the dominate culture in our effort to move towards true sustainability.  They will be traveling throughout the bioregion, as far as the funds raised will take us. To these ends Cascadia Matters is working on a fundraiser to help put together a Pacific Northwest film screening tour in cities throughout Cascadia. Those who would like to support this idea should donate here: http://www.indiegogo.com/occupiedcascadia.

The film will be screening on October 6th at 7pm in Tower Theater, Bend OR. Updates will continue to be posted here as we get more information about their developing film tour: Time: Sat, Oct 6th, 7pm Place: Tower Theater 835 NW Wall Street Bend, OR More info at http://cascadiamatters.org.

Towards a Cascadia Soccer Federation and the 2016 VIVA World Cup

cascadia-flag-tifojpg-0774e6d5905ba273.jpeg

For fans of football from around the Pacific Northwest, there is now an organizational push for the establishment of a Cascadian Soccer Federation, created jointly through the efforts of fans from the Vancouver Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers, and with the potential of supporting regional teams, awareness, charities and eventually fielding a Cascadian national team at the VIVA world cup (for federations not officially recognized by FIFA) in 2014 or 2016. To begin, federation organizers are investigating the steps necessary to form an official Cascadia Association Football Federation as a 501(c) nonprofit organization for the purposes of participating in friendlies and competitions as part of the NF-Board.  The NF-Board is an organization founded in Brussels in December of 2003 that is similar to FIFA, the primary organization which governs football/soccer worldwide. As such, the NF-Board governs new federations belonging to several categories which are not recognized by or affiliated with FIFA :  Peoples, Nations, Minorities and Isolated Territories populations. The NF-Board’s primary aim is to organize international football games, regardless of political or religious factors. It is not opposed to FIFA but rather complementary to it. It sees itself both as a “waiting room” for new nations wishing to become part of FIFA and a home for micronations, communities and peoples not officially recognized or represented in international football.

Every two years the NF-Board organizes the VIVA World Cup, which one of its 27 member Football Associations (FAs) hosts. Cascadia as a distinct cultural entity, bioregion and growing social movement with common interests across international lines can and should be represented in the sport which we in Cascadia are passionate about; football connects us to other similar communities, cultures and peoples around the globe, and can be a great way to help foster a sense of place and regional identity.

For that reason the organizers' aim is a simple one: To have Cascadia participate as a member FA in the 2014 or 2016 VIVA World Cup.

Those interested can read the full letter of incorporation below, or get involved by contacting organizers on twitter @CascadiaSoccer  or at cascadiafootball@gmail.com.

Painting the Space Needle: Last week to submit your design!

PNWSpaceNeedleDesign1.png

For many in the Pacific Northwest, it has been a dream to one day watch a Cascadia flag fly from the top of the Seattle Space Needle. Now, we can do better.

Starting early Tuesday, August 21st, the Space Needle began accepting design submissions in a contest to decide the next paint job for the iconic Seattle landmark for the next six months, providing Cascadian artists with a prime opportunity to share their skills and get a Cascadia related design on the Space needle!

Submissions are open to the public, and each person can submit up to 5 different designs.

The free contest, which is open for submissions until September 20, can be found at the Space Needle's website, spaceneedle.com/topthis.html. Aspiring contestants can download a blank vector image in the Needle top's distinctive doughnut shape, then fill it in with whatever design they choose – like, as in one already-submitted design, blue, white, and green stripes with three of the Cascadian flag's Douglas Fir trees spaced at equal intervals around the circle.

Contestants are also asked to a submit a description with their image. Participants should use whatever comes to mind, but are also welcome to use ours if nothing better comes to mind:

“The Cascadia Douglas Fir design is inspired by the Pacific Northwest. The blue portion of the design represents the rich sky and the Pacific Ocean, along with the Salish Sea, lakes, and other inland waters. The white represents the mountains, snow, and clouds, while the green represents the evergreen forests of the Pacific Northwest. The Douglas Firs, trees that were named for explorer David Douglas, whose explorations during the early 18th century first documented the ‘Cascading waterfalls’ of the mountain range that later bore the name “the Cascades” symbolize endurance and resilience. These colors and icon together represent the distinct nature of the Pacific Northwest, blending its unique geography, history, and culture together into a single unified design.”

The possibilities are endless! Those with graphic design interest may wish to depict iconic scenes of Cascadia – the flag flying atop a mountain, a soccer match or on a backdrop of the Pacific coast. Those (like the CascadiaNow artistic staff) whose talents are limited to drawing stick figures in Paint may find themselves taking a somewhat less grandiose approach – but all submissions are encouraged! More than one application is possible per contestant, so don't worry about finding that single perfect design – submit several!

Applications will be narrowed to a field of five finalists by a group of local artists, then voted on by the public to determine the winning design. Expect an update in our October newsletter, especially if a Cascadia-related design (or several) make it into the final round!

Anyone who makes a submission can trend on twitter with #topthis, make it visible with #Cascadia and make sure to let us know, either by emailing us at cascadianow@gmail.com or @cascadianow and we'll make sure to repost your design.

We can’t wait to see your designs!
