Sign Club
Sign Club is a safe community classroom space that welcomes people of different cultural and economic backgrounds. It is accessible for everyone, regardless of financial circumstance. This language is for anyone who chooses to use it as one of their ways of communicating. Sign Club accommodates a diverse range of learners, promotes individual support, and empowers students to engage in meaningful and thoughtful discussions.
““Teaching sign language to the community, outside of an institution, is a radical act that brings me great joy and personal fulfillment. I strive to remain open and curious about my community as much as they remain open and curious about this language. We are all working together to fight towards our collective liberation.””
Sign Sign Project
Using the power of public art, the Sign Sign Project exists alongside Sign Club to inspire people to learn ASL, while also spreading awareness about Deaf culture across the United States. This project’s core values are education, accessibility, communication, empathy, and a greater understanding of each other as human beings coming from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. By raising questions surrounding the benefits and values of learning sign language, the idea is that people will be inspired to learn sign and about deaf culture.
Sign Club founder Valerie Rose (left,) is deaf. Her first language is American Sign Language (ASL). The deaf world is very visual, so she feels the most connected to drawing, painting, and using her hands. As an activist, she uses her art to support causes that matter most to her. She is the coordinator of the Sign Sign Project, inspiring people to learn ASL and spreading awareness about Deaf culture across the United States. She is Sign Club’s ASL teacher and lives in Northern California, where she enjoys teaching and signing with her community.
